Tik Tok: What we've learnt so far...
So, its 2020 and If you’re not on Tik Tok then what are you even doing? If you’ve been living under a rock somewhere and aren’t up to speed, we’ll break it down for you. Tik Tok is a viral video sharing app that has really taken off worldwide in the last 12 months. Think short, snappy videos put to a soundtrack of top pop hit music. We can’t even begin to think about the countless hours we’ve spent scrolling this addictive video sharing app and while yes, we HAVE wasted a lot of time (but hey, its 2020- the year of lockdown, and what else would we be doing anyway?), we have picked up on a few handy tips, tricks, hacks and developed a few new obsessions along the way too.
Viral Cooking Trends and Hacks
While some of us spent the majority of our time in quarantine binge watching Netflix, lying on the couch scrolling social media and online shopping, some others were getting creative in the kitchen on Tik Tok. All of a sudden, feeds everywhere were filled with insane whipped coffees, and the banana bread baking trend spread worldwide almost as fast as Covid did.
Whipped coffee was EVERYWHERE and we have Tik Tok to thank for this. Officially known as Dalgona coffee, cloud coffee or simply “Tik Tok Coffee” This sweet, fluffy drink became wildly popular and was widely shared on social media. The tag #dalgonacoffee has over 300 million views in itself!
Baking was a big trend with creators everywhere sharing their recipes for cookies, brownies, cupcakes, sourdough and of course, banana bread….and we’re definitely not mad about it. Thanks to these short, easy to watch instructional vids, we can now confidently and quickly whip up a batch of chocolate chip cookies…. And if you can’t, well, Tik Tok’s got your back and a recipe is only a swipe away.
There were also a few ingenious cooking hack moments that had us all saying “why didn’t I think of that?!”. The tag #foodhack is an internet wormhole that you could get lost in for hours. We’ve learned how to juice a lemon without getting our hands sticky- just stab and squeeze, hull a strawberry using a straw, remove egg yolks with a water bottle, peel a mango in under 10 seconds and who could forget someones genius dad teaching us how to remove a lettuce stem in one swift, easy smack on the counter? Life changing. LOL.
Trending songs and the rise and rise of the Tik Tok dance
Tik Tok dances. By now, I’m sure we’ve ALL seen at least one of our fave influencers trying out this trend. Whether you LOVE it, or think its totally Cringe-worthy, there’s no denying the popularity and viral ability of the Tik Tok dance.
We’re not going to lie, we may have spent a whole weekend learning the “Savage” dance with our girlfriends, and while we may not exactly be the next Addison Rae or Loren Grey, it was definitely a fun way to pass the time. Car dance- offs while sitting at the traffic lights will never be the same again.
Bored In The House, Dua Lipa’s Don’t Start Now, Glitter by BENEE, Drakes Tootsie Slide and of course anything by Hot Girl Megan Thee Stallion were the perfect soundtracks to some of 2020s best viral dance videos.
The Tik Tok Workout
There was a stage in quarantine where we all thought we were coming out with rock hard abs and so caught on the Tik Tok workout. Gyms were closed, and we were all confined to our living room floor.
Enter- Short, snappy Tik Toks, instructing us on cardio circuits, core work outs and how to perform the perfect squat, taking over feeds everywhere. And while our fitness motivation may have been short lived (Baking cookies took preference over an ab workout for most of us), we know if we ever need fitspo, we’ll find it on Tik Tok.
Fashion Trends and Styling videos
Hands up if you went hard on the online shopping while in lockdown? We know we definitely did. Cute Outfits kept showing up on the doorstep only for us to wear them from the kitchen to the lounge room and back again.
Your fave fashion bloggers didn’t let that stop them though, and Tik Tok became the perfect place for showcasing their stylish outfits and cute styling hacks. Stuck for fashion inspo now that the world is opening up again? Look no further than Tik ToK.
